Donald E. Nelson Sr., age 83, of Dixon and formerly of Chicago, died Saturday July 21, 2018, at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 6, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Raynard and Louise (Franklin) Nelson. He had been a Printer for Premier Graphics in Chicago for over 25 years prior to his retirement in 1979. Don was a member of Boy Scout Troop 392, in Chicago's Austin community. He enjoyed camping in the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest near Minocqua, WI, and spending time with his family. He had served in the Illinois National Guard. Don married Margaret "Peggy" Stendebach at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Chicago on January 15, 1955. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers Richard, Larry, and John Nelson; 1 sister Patricia Jones. Survivors include his wife of 63 years; 3 sons Donald E. (Kim) Nelson Jr., of Decatur, GA, Ronald J. (Nancy) Nelson of Hinckley, and Guy R. (Melissa) Nelson of Brookfield; 8 grandchildren Ty and Kendall Nelson, Ronn (Sarah) Nelson, Michael (Nicole) Nelson, and Matthew (Randi) Nelson, and Guy (Sarah) Nelson, Kyle (Kim) Nelson, and Megan (Stephen) McLaughlin; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters Mary Lou McLaughlin and Joan Marie Nelson both of Oakbrook; 1 brother-in-law Joseph (Mary Ellen) Stendebaugh of Franklin Park; special aunt Louise Nelson of Momence; many nieces and nephews. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
